Jarvis Lynn Cain (1933-2024) professional resume and academic publications

Farmers Market SW | Washington DC
Jarvis Lynn Cain in 2021.

Jarvis Lynn Cain retired in 1999 as Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at University of Maryland College Park. This page presents a summary of his resume and publications. For administrative purposes at the university, he submitted a comprehensive resume in 1998 (downloadable below). Cain’s main areas of research were food distribution, future of food production, and direct marketing of farm products. He promoted the kind of farmers markets that are common now in towns and cities where local farm goods are sold direct to consumers. He saw direct sales as a win for farmers (better profit than offered by the big distributors) and a win for local consumers (fresh, good food at prices below what nearby shops charged). Cain was especially keen to develop local markets in low income areas of cities, such as Washington DC, so hard-pressed families could enjoy a culture of good cooking and healthy eating. Cain also accurately predicted a number of key changes in food distribution during the 1980s and 1990s.
