Professor Jarvis Lynn Cain, 90, died on March 9, 2024. Jarvis was born on October 1, 1933 to Benjamin Harrison Cain and Lona Bertha (Randall) Cain in Warsaw, Indiana. He had one sister, Joyce Eloise (Cain) Moore, who predeceased him in 2014. 

Jarvis attended Purdue University, graduating with a degree in General Agriculture, then attended Ohio State University, graduating with a doctorate in Agricultural Economics. He started his career at  International Harvester in Chicago, IL, before joining University of Maryland College Park where he served 37 years as Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics.  

In 1957, Jarvis married Patricia Ann (Whitton) Cain with whom he had five children, Julia Anne, Michael Edward, Joseph Allen, Fredrick Andrew, and Mee Jung Kang. Patricia died in 2002. 

In 1999, Jarvis retired from the UMCP and spent his time in Laurel, MD playing golf and cheering on Maryland Terrapin’s women’s basketball team.  

Jarvis moved to the Eastern Shore in 2005, settling in Salisbury, MD. He was active in the Salisbury  community, serving on the boards of the Sleepy Hollow Homeowner’s Association, the Institute of  Retired Persons (IRP), the Association for Lifelong Learning (ALL), and the Rockawalkin Ruritan Club; teaching a course on Great Decisions at both Salisbury University and Chesapeake College; and  continuing to support the ‘Lady Terps’. 

Jarvis is survived by his children, Julie (Tim), Michael (Vivian), Joe (Celine), Fred (Annie) and Mee  Jung (Norman), as well as his grandchildren, Bryan (Talha), Laurel (Zulfikar), Timothy, Christopher,  Sabrina and Penelope. 

As per his wishes, Jarvis was cremated, and his ashes were sprinkled in the Chesapeake Bay. Any donations in remembrance of Jarvis should be directed to ALL, IRP, Rockawalkin Ruritan or the Ward Foundation, all organizations he passionately supported, or to Coastal Hospice.
