WeAreSTS Season 2 logo

Episode library for WeAreSTS, an official podcast of UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS). WeAreSTS includes project work from STS students and staff. The host and producer is Professor Joe Cain.

WeAreSTS Episodes

Our episodes explore research or teaching themes that are part of the research subject, “Science and Technology Studies,” which we abbreviate as STS. Some episodes will be interviews about active research projects. Other episodes will support STS subjects in teaching or public engagement. We also have career-focused episodes interviewing STS alumni about life after university: how did they make that transition into their working life, and what advice do they have for those thinking about studying with us.

We also broadcast episodes from the STSNewsRoom.

Podcasting with Purpose

Our overall goal is to help teachers, applicants, and influencers answer questions about our subject:

  • What is STS?
  • What does learning in the subject involve?
  • Why would I want to do this, too?
  • What do people do with an STS degree?
  • Is this career direction for me?

WeAreSTS is available for listening on Apple Podcast, Spotify, and most other podcast listening apps. Our host platform is RSS.com.

And we’re off…this week we launched podcasting with WeAreSTS (Feb 2021)

With podcasting such a popular medium for communication, I decided to give it a try. At UCL, when I was asked to manage my department’s recruitment efforts into our undergraduate and masters programmes, podcasting seemed […]

It is made of four life-size bronze figures flying through a steel grid. It was inspired by a discarded and mangled lobster pot that the artist had found on Brighton beach. In his imagination, the washed-up object that had seemingly helped the lobsters escape, translated itself into a wider story of human exodus and release – a dash for freedom. Diamantopoulo describes the figures as “at once profound, frivolous and boisterous, occupying the air like a flock of birds and inspired by modern dance choreography”. Bronze casting at Milwyn Foundry and fabrication of the steel grid and assembly by Art Fabrications. The sculpture weighs 2.2 tonnes and measures approximately 3.5 metres high and 3 meters wide. Flight of the Langoustine was inaugurated on the Hove Plinth on 17 September 2023.
